Handwritten statement

The excerpt at the bottom of scanned page 3 (see below) is apparently an over-copy from the bottom of page 1, beginning with "knew.  I would like to help to prove that Greg didn't die from drinking.  I went through a lot watching Greg die."

I Pat Mitchell make the following statement to retired Detective P.E. Beasley of Fayetteville Police Dept. of N.C. on my own free will.  That I have no promises nor have I been encouraged in anyway to make this statement.

Possibly before April or May Greg was active in his new job.  For one time he was interested in making something of his self.  In April or May George Battle (FBI) came to our home.  From then on Greg went to pieces.  I believe he talked with George Battle three or four times at the FBI in Charlotte.  He got where he didn't want to go to sleep.  He slept with a rifle & where ever he would go he was carrying something for protection.  One night he said he saw somebody coming up in the yard and he fired the rifle a couple of times.  He said something about the MacDonald case & he said he didn't have anything to do with it.  He said that the FBI was wanting him to kill a man.  He cut an article out of the paper about the man that he said they wanted him to kill.  I don't know if others were involved.  I am not sure if or Greg was afraid that they would do something to me & get me involved.  He didn't want to do it.  He said possibly they could put him in jail -- why I do not know.  He wanted to go somewhere so he wouldn't be bothered or start coming after me.  After George Battle came he stated drinking heavily & he was no longer the Greg I knew.  I would like to help to prove that Greg didn't die from drinking.  I went through a lot watching Greg die.

I feel he started talking some for I think he was worried about what was going to happen to him.  It had been a short while after the FBI talked with him -- I guess he told them he didn't want to get involved.  It wasn't too long after that a man in a foreign country -- a well known man was shot in the side of his face.  This is what Greg showed me that was who they wanted him to kill.  When I find the article I will send it to you.  Who ever they were they didn't get the job done.

The things in his past he wanted to leave behind.  But when we were married I feel he was mixed up.  He talked a lot about his buddies in service & Vietnam.  I dated him a great deal before he went in the service & when he got out he wasn't the same.  He was nervous & said he had malaria.  He had bad dreams when he came out of the service & it had to do with his buddies & what ever while in the service.  Sometime he would be ringing wet while he was sleeping.

While dealing with the FBI Greg called his brother & told him to get his scrapbook that his mother had.  He wanted it so he could get some pictures out so the FBI wouldn't get a hold of them.  He got it & I'm not sure if he removed any.

After being discharged from the Army he received an honorable discharge.  But they had in his papers that he was unstable

Shortly after Greg's burial I found some Army material at his grave.  Not all at once.
(1)  First article was an Army hat.
(2)  Second article was an American flag & Air Borne insignia with the following letters or words on the insignia words were DEOPPRESSO, LIBER.
(3)  An Army insignia with an arrowhead attached on also an Air Borne insignia attached.  Plus attached the words Special Forces.  Greg was buried on June 7, 1982.
(4)  Three American flags were placed on Veteran's Day & I don't know who put them there.
I have read the following three pages & these are true & correct to the best of my knowledge.

I give this statement (3) pages to retired detective P.E. Beasley on my own free will.
